Vera James House Celebrates 35 Years of Care and Community
02 Oct, 2025
Vera James House, Ely’s much-loved care home, marked a remarkable milestone this month as residents, staff, families, and guests came together to celebrate its 35th anniversary. The occasion was both a joyful gathering and a heartfelt reminder of the home’s deep roots in the local community.
The event began with a warm welcome from two distinguished guests: Dame Polly Courtice DBE LVO, Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, and local MP Charlotte Cane. Their presence highlighted the importance of Vera James House not only as a place of care but as a cornerstone of Ely’s community for over three decades. Guests also enjoyed a moving excerpt from a speech reflecting on how Vera James House first began, tracing the journey from its founding vision to the thriving, supportive home it is today –
“Vera James House was officially opened by H.R.H. The Duchess of Gloucester on September 11th 1990.
The real Vera James after whom we are named was a reclusive, but generous woman. She served on the Board of Cambridge Housing Society for 20 years, and when she died in 1987 she bequeathed the equivalent of £2,014,090 to the elderly and needy of Ely.
Vera James House was originally built by The Cambridge Housing Society, and was bought by Glenholme Healthcare in January 2020.”
True to the spirit of community, the celebrations were filled with personal touches. The beautiful anniversary cake was lovingly baked by a family member of a staff colleague, a gesture that perfectly captured the home’s sense of togetherness. Residents and guests were treated to a lavish buffet spread, with a feast of delicious food prepared for all to share.
The afternoon was brought to life with musical entertainment, as singers performed a repertoire of well-loved songs. Residents, staff, and visitors alike joined in the enjoyment, clapping along and sharing smiles that reflected the warmth of the occasion.
Over the past 35 years, Vera James House has stood as a place where people are not only cared for but cherished. The anniversary event was a fitting celebration of the dedication of its staff, the love of families, and the enduring community spirit that continues to make the home such a special place.
